Fairy Tale Adventure at Archbishop Benson School

Archbishop Benson School, located on a stunning site overlooking the city of Truro, faced a common school playground dilemma. They had a large, attractive grassy bank within their Key Stage One area that the children were desperate to play on, but it offered little in the way of structured play or safety.
The school wanted to transform this underutilised slope into an area that would challenge all Key Stage One children. The goal was to create a space that wouldn't just be a one-time novelty but would continue to provide physical and imaginative challenges as the students grew.

The Story Behind the Project

Unlocking the Potential of the Landscape

Archbishop Benson School, located on a stunning site overlooking the city of Truro, faced a common school playground dilemma. They had a large, attractive grassy bank within their Key Stage One area that the children were desperate to play on, but it offered little in the way of structured play or safety.
The school wanted to transform this underutilised slope into an area that would challenge all Key Stage One children. The goal was to create a space that wouldn't just be a one-time novelty but would continue to provide physical and imaginative challenges as the students grew.

Merging Education with Imagination

Our team focused on a dual-purpose design. We wanted to satisfy the children's natural urge to climb and scramble up the bank while providing the teachers with a functional space for outdoor learning.
By adopting a Fairy Tale theme, we were able to create a cohesive narrative across the site, linking the physical play equipment with an imaginative storytelling zone. This approach ensures the play area supports the curriculum just as much as it supports physical health.

A Bespoke Multi-Level Experience

Designed specifically for the unique topography of Archbishop Benson School, the new installation turned the problem bank into the star of the playground.
Key Features of the Fairy Tale Play Area:
• Bank Scrambling Activities: We installed a series of energetic climbing and scrambling elements that allow older Key Stage One children to test their strength and coordination on the slope.
• Themed Role Play: For the younger users, we included colourful, bespoke equipment that encourages imaginative Fairy Tale play, fostering social interaction and language skills.
• Outdoor Classroom & Stage: A dedicated performance area and stage was integrated into the design. This provides a magical setting for outdoor lessons, drama performances, and storytelling sessions.
• Inclusive Design: The selection of equipment ensures that there is something for every ability level, from gentle role play at the base to more rigorous challenges on the incline.

A Magical Hub for Learning

The result is a vibrant, multi-functional space that has become the heartbeat of the Key Stage One area. By embracing the natural slope of the land rather than working against it, we have created a play area that feels integrated, adventurous, and truly unique to the school.
Whether children are performing on the stage or conquering the grassy heights, the Fairy Tale area provides a safe and stimulating environment that will inspire the pupils of Archbishop Benson School for many years to come.
