Big Imagination for a Small Space
Trenance Childcare in Newquay faced a common challenge for early years providers: they had a relatively small outdoor area but a big vision for their students. They wanted to introduce a coastal-themed play zone that integrated a variety of physical challenges, specifically focusing on climbing and crawling activities for toddlers.

Creating a Hero Feature
When space is at a premium, we often recommend focusing on one high-value, bespoke piece rather than several smaller items. This approach creates a clear anchor for imaginative play while keeping the area uncluttered and safe.
Our design team drew inspiration from Newquay’s local fishing heritage to create a unique, compact play structure that packs a wide range of developmental benefits into a small footprint.
The Trenance Trawler
The result was a bespoke structure that the staff quickly dubbed the Trenance Trawler. This unique play boat was designed specifically for the toddler age group, ensuring all heights and challenges were safe yet stimulating.
Key Features of the Trenance Trawler:
The installation was such a success that the local newspaper attended the official opening to capture photos of the children exploring their new vessel.
• Climbing & Crawling: Multiple entry and exit points encourage children to navigate through and over the structure, building core strength and coordination.
• Vibrant Visuals: We used high-contrast, colourful panels to grab the children's attention and stimulate sensory development.
• Bespoke Branding: The boat was designed especially for the centre, making it a unique feature that sets Trenance Childcare apart.
• Imagination Hub: The trawler theme provides a perfect setting for role-play, allowing children to act out stories of life at sea.
