When Wadebridge Town Council approached Outdoor Play People for a revamp of the Jubilee Field play area, they had two clear priorities. First, they wanted to incorporate high-quality existing equipment that had stood the test of time. Second, and most importantly, they required a design where accessibility was paramount, ensuring the park was inclusive for all visitors regardless of their physical abilities.
Wadebridge is a town steeped in maritime and architectural history. This rich heritage provided the perfect spark for our design team to create a space that felt uniquely local while meeting the highest modern standards of accessibility.

The Story Behind the Project

Honoring History through Inclusive Design

When Wadebridge Town Council approached Outdoor Play People for a revamp of the Jubilee Field play area, they had two clear priorities. First, they wanted to incorporate high-quality existing equipment that had stood the test of time. Second, and most importantly, they required a design where accessibility was paramount, ensuring the park was inclusive for all visitors regardless of their physical abilities.
Wadebridge is a town steeped in maritime and architectural history. This rich heritage provided the perfect spark for our design team to create a space that felt uniquely local while meeting the highest modern standards of accessibility.

Bridging the Gap between Past and Present

Our strategy was to weave the identity of the region into the playground’s physical structure. The final design serves as a narrative journey, representing the iconic fishing port of Padstow on one side and the famous bridges of Wadebridge on the other.
To solve the accessibility challenge, we utilized the natural topography of the site. By connecting the play structures to the existing top paths, we were able to create level-entry points that removed traditional barriers to play.

A Dual-Zone Heritage Park

The revamped Jubilee Field features two distinct zones tailored to different age groups and ability levels:
• Padstow Harbour Toddler Towers: These are a specialized, reduced-scale version of our standard towers. They offer younger visitors an exciting physical challenge that is safe and age-appropriate, all wrapped in a coastal fishing theme.
• Wadebridge Towers: This large-scale installation features wide, wheelchair-accessible bridges. These bridges lead directly from the top path into the heart of the play equipment, allowing children with mobility aids to play alongside their peers at height.
• Sustainable Integration: We successfully refurbished and integrated the council’s existing equipment, ensuring the project was cost-effective and environmentally conscious.

A Landmark for the Community

The result is a vibrant, inclusive hub that has become a major success for the town. By combining the Wadebridge Towers and Padstow Harbour, we have provided a space where local history is celebrated through the joy of play.
Wadebridge is delighted with the new updated play area on Jubilee Field. It was a pleasure to work with Cathy and her team again, who have worked hard to ensure that the play area is a huge success.
